Current information on the containment measures in Austria

Austria reopens

From December 12th, the nationwide lockdown in Austria is coming to an end step-by-step. The infection rate has eased and allows regionally staggered openings. People without valid certificate of vaccination or recovery are only allowed to leave their homes for the journey to work/school/university, for grocery shopping or to go for a walk. Travelling to Austria for touristic purposes is possible again for vaccinated and recovered people.

Opening dates of all types of accommodation and restaurants/cafés in the Austrian provinces are as follows:

  • from 12 December: Tirol, Vorarlberg, Burgenland
  • from 17 December: Salzburg, Styria, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria
  • from 20 December: Vienna

Requirements for entering and staying in Austria from December, 20th 2021 onwards

For quarantine-free entry to Austria, people over the age of 12 (in Vienna over the age of 6) must provide credible evidence that they have only stayed in an area with low epidemiological risk in the last 10 days before entry and one of the following three conditions must be met. All certificates / proofs mentioned must be provided in German or English.

  • Vaccinated: A vaccine certificate is valid after receiving the second dose (for those vaccines that require two shots), the validity extends 270 days after the second vaccination. Those vaccinations that require only one dose are valid from the 21st day after the administration until January, 3rd 2022. From that day onwards a booster shot is required in order to be allowed to enter Austria. A vaccination certificate is only valid for the following vaccines: BioNtech/Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Johnson&Johnson.
  • Recovered: A medical certificate confirming a survived Covid-19 infection in the last 180 days that has been confirmed by molecular biology is also valid.
  • In addition to the vaccination or recovery certificate a negative PCR test not older than 72h is required. Only those who have already received their third vaccine / booster shot and those recovered from Covid within the last 90 days prior to the entry do NOT need to present a negative test result.

People older than 12 years need a valid certificate of vaccination or recovery (“2G” rule) in order to be allowed to use the services of hotels, gastronomy or leisure facilities! In Vienna children from 6 to 11,99 years have to present a negative test result to get access to those facilities. In the rest of Austria children under the age of 12 do not have to present any certificate.

People entering from a high-incidence or virus variant area are obliged to quarantine and need to present the pre-filled pre-travel clearance form (“PTC”) when entering Austria. This is available in German and English at https://entry.ptc.gv.at/en.html and must be presented in printed or electronic form.

The return travel regulations from Austria to the countries of origin must also be observed!
